Esterel Corniche

page still under construction
The Esterel Corniche is a blend of turquoise blue (sea), red (porphyry rocks used for Napoleon tomb) & green (lush vegetation).

The best preserved area starts at Theoule. Esterel mountain plunges in the blue sea. It is mainly breathtaking in early morning or at sunset, especially after a storm. The rocks and the sea take incredible colours: orange and red for the former, turquoise and deep blue for the later. Only the colours of Ayers Rock in Australia remind me of that. If you are lucky to be there at the right time the right day, you will never forget it. The best drive is between Trayas and St Raphael, There are a lot of spots where you can stop. You can also walk down in one of the little coves and have a swim and snorkel. There are a lot of fish (blue, yellow, red, glittering silver, with stripes, deceiving eyes, …). Of course it is not Barrier Reef or Red Sea but you can see tens of different fish kinds and hundreds or thousands of fish.

In Frejus you can visit the cathedral, Roman ruins, a Modern Art museum, a pagoda (North of Frejus) and a mosque, you enter the Maures Mountain.

Beyond, the main point of interest is St Tropez, the city of the stars (fashionable since Brigitte Bardot). In summer time you may meet there famous people such as Stallone, Nicholson, Bowie, Sting, ...
Off season, a promenade in the old city, the fish market and the castle ('citadelle') is really a must. There is also a very interesting art museum called Annonciade as well as a butterfly museum (about 4500 species).
In July/August, the village is really too crowded but if you still want to visit it, you sould avoid the road as you will be stuck in traffic jams for hours. I recommend you take a boat in St Raphaël.

The beach of Tahiti/Pampelonne is said to be the most beautiful of the coast.
